Epilepsy

At DHR Health, we offer a full spectrum of care for people living with epilepsy—from diagnostics and surgical treatment to ongoing support and education. Our Epilepsy Center is home to the region’s only epilepsy surgical program using the ROSA robot and the only ABRET-certified EEG lab in South Texas. Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes recurring, unprovoked seizures. A person may be diagnosed with epilepsy after two or more unprovoked seizures—or after a single seizure with a high likelihood of recurrence. While some seizures are linked to brain injury or genetics, many cases of epilepsy have no identifiable cause.

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)

Our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) helps doctors understand your seizures better through detailed inpatient observation. We use continuous video EEG to see exactly when and how seizures happen, helping us plan the best treatment for you.

  • Phase I Monitoring: Uses EEG sensors placed on the scalp (non-invasive) to record seizure activity and determine the best treatment options.
  • Phase II Monitoring: Uses a high-tech robot called ROSA to place tiny sensors directly inside the brain (minimally invasive). This allows us to pinpoint exactly where seizures start, helping guide epilepsy surgery safely and accurately.

EEG Services

An EEG (electroencephalogram) is a painless test that records brain activity and helps doctors diagnose epilepsy. We provide different EEG options based on your specific needs:

  • Routine EEG: A short outpatient test done at DHR Health Main Hospital, quickly recording brain activity to evaluate seizures.
  • Ambulatory EEG: Allows you to go home wearing a portable EEG device, recording brain activity continuously for up to 96 hours in your normal daily environment.
  • ABRET-Certified EEG Lab: Our EEG lab meets high national standards, guaranteeing reliable and accurate test results.

Advanced Imaging and Diagnostics

Getting the right diagnosis is the first step to treating epilepsy effectively. At DHR Health, we use advanced tools to better understand how epilepsy affects the brain and how to treat it:

  • 3T MRI: A powerful brain scan that gives detailed images, helping doctors find any changes or problems in the brain that could be causing seizures-especially useful when planning surgery.
  • Neuropsychological testing: Tests that check memory, thinking, emotions, and behavior. These help us understand how epilepsy affects your daily life and guide personalized care.

Epilepsy Surgery Program

For some patients, medications alone aren’t enough to control seizures. At DHR Health, we have the region’s only epilepsy surgery program that uses the advanced ROSA robot to help treat epilepsy safely and effectively.

  • ROSA® Robotic-Assisted Surgery: A high-tech robot that helps surgeons perform precise, minimally invasive brain surgeries, leading to better results and faster recovery.
  • Surgical Options: Depending on where seizures start in the brain, surgeries may include removing a small part causing seizures (focal resection or lesionectomy) or other minimally invasive procedures that can greatly reduce or stop seizures altogether.

Clinical Research

At DHR Health, we’re committed to bringing the latest treatments to our patients. Right now, we’re part of a research study testing cenobamate, a new medication for adults with partial-onset epilepsy who are newly diagnosed or whose seizures have come back. This means our patients may have early access to new and effective treatment options.

FAQ:

STAY: STAY with the person and start timing the seizure.
SAFE: Keep the person SAFE.
SIDE: Turn the person onto their SIDE if they are not awake and aware.

You should never force something into the mouth of someone having a seizure. Forcing something in their mouth may chip their teeth, cut their gums, or even break someone's jaw.

It is physically impossible to swallow your tongue during a seizure.

Do not restrain someone having a seizure. Most seizures end in seconds or a few minutes and will end on their own.
