DHR Health Transplant Institute Earns Top State and National Rankings

Edinburg, Texas:  The DHR Health Transplant Institute announced today that it has been recognized among the state’s and nation’s top performing kidney transplant centers, earning the no. 2 ranking in the State and no. 16 ranking in the Nation, according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).

The SRTR, which is maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, publishes performance metrics for every transplant program in the nation twice annually, in January and July. The latest report was released on July 7, 2026, and is available online through the SRTR website at https://srtr.hrsa.gov.

This state and national accomplishment reflects the commitment the DHR Health Transplant Institute has to providing exceptional, patient-centered care as well as outstanding transplant outcomes for patients with end-stage kidney disease.

“These metrics reflect what matters most to our patients – receiving a kidney transplant sooner and achieving excellent outcomes afterward. This achievement is made possible due to every member of our transplant team – from physicians, nurses, operating room staff, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, financial coordinators, administrators, and countless others,” Dr. Sridhar Allam, DHR Health Transplant Institute Medical Director and Nephrologist. “We are deeply grateful to the extraordinary generosity of organ donors and their families whose selfless gifts transform lives, offers hope to patients in need of life saving transplants, and inspires us every day to strive for excellence.”

Allam went on to say then it is a privilege to provide world-class kidney transplant care close to home for the residents of the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas and that the DHR Health Transplant Institute is deeply grateful for the trust and confidence patients and referring physicians place in the team as they remain committed to continually advancing access, quality and outcomes for the communities they serve.

Established in 2017, the DHR Health Transplant Institute is the only facility of its kind serving adult patients throughout the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Corpus Christi, and surrounding communities.

At the DHR Health Transplant Institute, a multidisciplinary team of physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, nurse coordinators, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare providers collaborate to provide specialized and compassionate care for kidney, liver, and pancreatic disorders, including kidney transplantation.

“Congratulations to the entire DHR Health Transplant Institute team on this remarkable achievement. Being recognized as the No. 2 program in Texas and among the top programs in the nation is a reflection of our commitment to excellence and compassionate patient care,” said Marissa Castaneda, Senior Executive Vice President for DHR Health.

In 2025, the DHR Health Transplant Institute proudly performed 101 kidney transplants, a historic achievement for DHR Health and the Rio Grande Valley.

With esteemed rankings from SRTR, the DHR Health Transplant Institute remains committed to providing advanced kidney transplant care to patients of the Rio Grande Valley, where they are maximizing care and minimizing travel for our patients. This local access to advanced kidney transplant services significantly reduces financial and emotional burdens on patients and their families.

About DHR Health

DHR Health was founded in 1997 by a visionary group of local physicians and business leaders to address the healthcare challenges and disparities faced by the people of the Rio Grande Valley, a region in deep South Texas that has been historically underserved, lacking access to healthcare resources found in major metropolitan areas.

Today, DHR Health stands as one of the largest physician-owned hospital systems in the United States. The health system has expanded access to world-class, comprehensive care through six inpatient facilities and more than 80 outpatient clinics. Serving a diverse community of over 1.5 million residents, DHR Health is powered by a medical staff of over 625 physicians, 235 advanced practice providers, and 1,800 nursing professionals among its 6,200 employees, offering access to more than 70 medical specialties and subspecialties throughout the region.
Headquartered in Edinburg, Texas, DHR Health is committed to serving Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy counties. Recent expansions include the development of a new Medical Campus in Starr County, designed to expand access to primary and specialty healthcare services, advance clinical research, and train the next generation of physicians through the region’s first Family Medicine Residency Graduate Medical Education Program. Additionally, major projects include the opening of a new hospital in Brownsville and the upcoming Behavioral Health Hospital in Pharr, built in partnership with the City of Pharr and the State of Texas.

DHR Health is dedicated to advancing clinical research and expanding graduate medical education to train the next generation of physicians in the Rio Grande Valley. With the region’s largest medical residency program and the only fellowship programs in South Texas, DHR Health continues to invest in graduate medical education and recently partnered with the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine to provide undergraduate medical education training opportunities for future physicians.

Distinguished by innovation and excellence, DHR Health became the first Level I Trauma Center in the region and continues to invest in advanced medical technologies, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), robotic surgery platforms such as the Da Vinci 5 and ROSA systems, and the ION robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system. The health system proudly operates South Texas’s only freestanding and certified women’s hospital, recognized as a Level IV maternal care center for delivering the highest standard of care and has collaborated with Driscoll Children’s Hospital to provide pediatric care for those children. DHR Health has established, and continues to expand access to kidney transplant services in the Rio Grande Valley.

DHR Health continues to create a world-class health system by advancing medicine and increasing access for the communities we serve by empowering caregivers to heal through compassion, knowledge, innovation, integrated care and excellence.
