DHR Health, together with the Valley Athletic Trainers Association, are excited to enhance the field of sports medicine by holding a local seminar that will provide information and training on the latest guidelines and advancements in the field.
This cutting-edge event, dubbed TEAMS, or the Texas Emergency Athletic Management Seminar, is targeted for athletic trainers, nurses, physicians, and emergency technicians who work with student athletes of any age. The seminar will be presented free of charge and will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on July 28, 2023 at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance. Several DHR Health physicians and special guest speakers working with universities and athletic programs from throughout the country will make presentations and offer attendees with hands-on training and a skills lab.
“We’re so proud to partner with the Valley Athletic Trainers Association for this seminar, and the timing couldn’t be better given that the new school year is almost upon us,” said Marissa Castañeda, Senior Executive Vice-President. “This seminar, which will focus on the latest developments in sports medicine, is a testament to DHR Health’s dedication to advancing medical knowledge and empowering healthcare professionals,” she added.
The TEAMS event will feature several authorities in the field of sports medicine, including:
- Mike Kordecki, DPT, SCS, ATC. Visiting from the state of Illinois, Dr. Kordecki has given a number of lectures on the rehabilitation of low back injuries in athletes. He will present on “Decision Making Process for Pre-Hospital Equipment Removal in Catastrophic Spine Injuries.”
- Missy Fraser, PhD, LAT, ATC. Visiting from the state of South Dakota, Dr. Fraser is a neuroscientist and certified athletic trainer with expertise in the clinical management of sports-related concussion. He will present on “Potential Catastrophic Head Injuries in Sports.”
- Michael Szymanski, PhD, ATC. Visiting from the state of Connecticut, Dr. Szymanski is currently the Director of Education at the Korey Stringer Institute and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Connecticut. He will present on “Best Practice Approaches to Heat Stroke Prevention.”
- Jim Kyle, MD. Visiting from the state of West Virginia, Dr. Kyle’s career as an Emergency Room physician spans 30-plus years. He will present on the “Medical Timeout.”
- Ron Courson, ATC, PT, SCS, NRAEMT, CSCS. Visiting from the state of Georgia, Courson is the Executive Associate Athletic Director –Sports Medicine, University of Georgia. He will present on “Emergency Preparation.”
- Ryan Pittsinger, PhD. Visiting from College Station, Dr. Pittsinger is the Assistant Athletic Director, Director of Counseling and Sport Psychology Services, Texas A&M University. He will present on “Mental Health Emergencies.”
- Mike Salinas, Head Football Coach for Texas A&M Kingsville and RGV native.
Distinguished presenters from DHR Health include:
- Jeff Skubic, DO, DHR Health Level I Trauma Medical Director, whose presentation will focus on trauma response.
- Olabiyi Akala, MD, DHR Health Emergency Department Medical Director, whose presentation will focus on “Airway Management.”
- Leonel Estofan, MD, DHR Health Neurologist, whose presentation will focus on “Emergency Management for Seizures.”
- Juan D. Palacios, MD, DHR Health Endocrine Diagnostic and Rapid Treatment Center Medical Director, whose presentation will focus on the “Diabetes and the Athlete.”
