Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to obtain an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory intercourse. It is a common problem that affects as many as 30 million men in the United States. There are a number of medical conditions that can cause ED, but the most common causes are diabetes and high blood pressure. ED may cause low self-esteem, depression, and distress for a man and his partner. If ED is affecting a man’s well-being, it should be treated.
At DHR Health Urology Institute, we specialize in non-surgical and surgical treatment for erectile dysfunction. Our physicians have a strong commitment to treating patients with compassion, respect and empathy. Our surgeons aim to return patients to the most intimate and private activities that can truly improve the quality of life.
Lifestyle Modifications: Regular exercise, healthy eating, weight loss, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption can improve ED.
Oral Medications: Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) are first-line treatments. They enhance blood flow to the penis and are effective for most men.
Vacuum Erection Devices: These devices create a vacuum to draw blood into the penis, followed by the placement of a constriction ring to maintain the erection.
Hormone Therapy: Testosterone replacement therapy is used for men with low testosterone levels contributing to ED.
Penile Injections: Medications like alprostadil are injected directly into the penis, causing an erection.
Surgical Implants: Penile implants, including inflatable or malleable devices, are a permanent solution for severe or treatment-resistant ED.
